GCSE Chinese Course

Exam board: Pearson
Exam code: 1CNO

Chinese has become increasingly important as a language of global business.

By studying Chinese you will become familiar with the fascinating culture and language of this historic and diverse country.

You will also increase your employability as there is always a demand for people who can speak more than one language across a very wide range of careers. This course focuses primarily on the natural use of language in authentic situations.

On the GCSE course you will develop your writing, speaking, reading and listening skills by studying a wide range of topics that will enable you to have successful initial communication when visiting China on either business or pleasure.

There are five common topic areas with which you will become familiar:

The five themes are:

  1. Identity and culture
  2. Local area, holiday, travel
  3. School
  4. Future aspirations, study and work
  5. International and global dimension

Curriculum

The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Chinese (spoken Mandarin/spoken
Cantonese)

Students will develop their ability to communicate with Chinese native
speakers in both speech and writing. Students will study across a variety of contexts relevant to their age and interests and will also develop a greater awareness of the culture of
Chinese-speak

The aims and objectives of this qualification are to enable students to:

  • develop their ability to communicate confidently and coherently with native speakers in speech and writing, conveying what they want to say with increasing accuracy
  • express and develop thoughts and ideas spontaneously and fluently
  • listen to and understand clearly articulated, standard speech at near normal speed
  • deepen their knowledge about how language works and enrich their vocabulary in order for them to increase their independent use and understanding of extended language in a wide range of contexts
  • acquire new knowledge, skills and ways of thinking through the ability to understand and
respond to a rich range of authentic spoken and written material, adapted and abridged, as appropriate, including literary texts
  • develop awareness and understanding of the culture and identity of the countries and communities where the language is spoken
  • be encouraged to make appropriate links to other areas of the curriculum to enable bilingual and deeper learning, where the language may become a medium for constructing and applying knowledge
  • develop language-learning skills both for immediate use and to prepare them for further language study and use in school, higher education or employment
  • develop language strategies, including repair strategies

Assessment

The qualification consists of four externally examined papers based on the following skills:

  • listening
  • speaking
  • reading
  • writing

Students must complete their speaking assessment in April/May and all other assessments in May/June in any  single year.
Each paper is available at Foundation tier or Higher tier. Students will be entered for a single tier across all papers.

The use of dictionaries is not permitted. For Paper 2 this includes during the
preparation time.

Exam Access Arrangements

Exam access arrangements allow candidates/learners with special educational needs, disabilities or temporary injuries to access the assessment without changing the demands of the assessment.
For example, readers, scribes and Braille question papers. In this way, Awarding Bodies will comply with the duty of the Equality Act 2010 to make ‘reasonable adjustments’.

We can arrange exam access arrangements and assess you with our special assessor.  The deadline for application to the exam board is the February of the year the learner sits exams.
