A Level Chinese Course

Exam board: Pearson

A level:  9CN0

An A level in Chinese is an ideal subject whether you are taking mainly sciences, humanities or arts subjects. As China is developing faster than ever, Chinese becomes an increasingly popular subject in the world; many schools, colleges and universities would value the qualification. Any student who has an interest in Chinese culture and language, and who is looking to acquire a skill currently in demand all around the world, would be well advised to take the subject. Also, the huge requirement for native English speaking teachers in China benefits those who have the ambition to pursue a career in China.

Entry Requirements

To study A Level Chinese you need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4-9 / C or above including English Language. You also require grade 5 / C or above including in Chinese.

Curriculum

Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Chinese (spoken Mandarin/spoken Cantonese)

the Chinese-speaking world.

The aims and objectives of this qualification are to enable students to:

  • Learn about daily life topics and practise your skills in Chinese speaking, reading, listening and writing.
  • Use the Chinese language accurately to express facts and ideas, and to present explanations, opinions and information in both speech and writing.
  • Develop awareness and understanding of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries and communities where the language is spoken.
  • Organise and host Chinese festivals at the College, sharing knowledge of Chinese language and culture with your community.
  • Understand written Chinese and develop your ability to transfer meaning from Chinese into English.
The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced Level  in Chinese (spoken Mandarin/spoken Cantonese) consists of two externally-examined papers assessing listening, reading and writing and a speaking assessment. The speaking assessment is externally set.

The assessment will be available in traditional and simplified characters. All questions and

simplified characters.

Students must complete their speaking assessment in April/May and all other assessments in May/June in any single year.

The qualification consists of two externally examined papers based on the following skills:

Access Arrangements

Access Arrangements allow candidates/learners with special educational needs, disabilities or temporary injuries to access the assessment without changing the demands of the assessment.
For example, readers, scribes and Braille question papers. In this way, Awarding Bodies will comply with the duty of the Equality Act 2010 to make ‘reasonable adjustments’.

We can arrange access arrangements and assess you with our special assessor.  The deadline for application to the exam board is the February of the year the learner sits the exams.
