The study of A level Sociology focuses on contemporary society and refers to Wales where applicable. Studying sociology fosters the development of critical and reflective thinking with a respect for social diversity. It provides an awareness of the importance of social structure and social action in explaining social issues. Students are encouraged to develop their own sociological awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world and Welsh society.
The subject looks at the way in which society shapes our lives, and relates to individual experience of whatever kind, to the nature of wider society. A sociologist might study how people behave in families, why some people are involved in crime, why some children perform better in schools, why some people are poor, the role of women, and so on.
Entry Requirements
To study A Level Sociology you need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4-9 / C or above including English Language and Mathematics.
Curriculum
The study of WJEC AS and A level in Sociology focuses on contemporary society and refer toWales where applicable. Studying sociology must foster the development of critical and reflective thinking with a respect for social diversity. It must provide an awareness of the importance of social structure and social action in explaining
social issues.
The following concepts and theoretical issues will be covered across the
specification:
- social order, social control
- social change
- conflict and consensus
- social structure and social action
- the role of values
- the relationship between sociology issues and contemporary social policy.
At AS and A2 learners will be expected to demonstrate:
- a wide range and depth of knowledge and understanding
- skills of application, analysis, interpretation and evaluation
At A2 there is a greater emphasis on the higher level skills of application, analysis, interpretation and evaluation.

opportunities will be available in the summer assessment period each year, until the end of the
life of the specification.
This specification is divided into a total of 4 units, 2 AS unit and 2 A2 units. Weightings noted below are expressed in terms of the full A level qualification.

Access Arrangements
Access Arrangements allow candidates/learners with special educational needs, disabilities or temporary injuries to access the assessment without changing the demands of the assessment.
For example, readers, scribes and Braille question papers. In this way, Awarding Bodies will comply with the duty of the Equality Act 2010 to make ‘reasonable adjustments’.
We can arrange access arrangements and assess you with our special assessor. The deadline for application to the exam board is the February of the year the learner sits the exams.
