Overview

IELTS Preparation course is an intensive 12 week English language preparation course taught by enthusiastic and passionate teachers as Swansea College, providing you with the best opportunity to improve your IELTS scores by up to one full point in just 12 weeks. This course is available through the year, and is usually taken after a General English course, depending on your level, this could be one or two terms.

When you study at Swansea College, you will be taught in a modern learning environment by teachers who are experienced in teaching international students, providing you with the best opportunity to improve your IELTS scores by up to one full point.

We accept applications through the year, however April would be our last entry date as students need to sit their IELTS exam prior to a September start at university.

Course Information

Our IELTS Preparation course is a language immersion course of 21 teaching hours per week for students who want to quickly improve their level of English as part of a small, mixed nationality group, and study specific Academic vocabulary and skills to help their career or further education.

Entry requirements: IELTS 4.5

You will complete a placement test.

Attend a tutorial session with your tutor to agree personal goals and develop an Individual Learning Path which needs to be completed every day in class.

Before booking

Our General English programme is designed to improve your English in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Once you reach B1 level you have the option of adding Academic modules.

Our University Foundation Programme is recognised by over 98 countries and we offer you a University progression package.

Courses start on Mondays. If the Monday is a public holiday, the course will start on Tuesday. Most courses are offered year-round, though there are some with a limited number of start dates. Contact us for course availability on your desired date.

For most of our programs you must be at least 18 years old. However, there are summer programs for younger students.

In order to have the widest choice of course and accommodation, we recommend you book as far in advance as possible, we recommend at least more than 4 weeks in advance.

All of our courses have beginner to upper intermediate classes.

After Booking

During the course, you will be given an Individual Student Record to assess your progress on a daily basis. Your teacher will record your class work, spoken participation in class, homework and scores on the level tests, which take place every 12 weeks and are followed by a one-on-one with your teacher. IELTS exams can be taken at Cardiff IELTS centre.

When you arrive at your accommodation, you will receive an email with all the information you need for your English course. On your first day, you must bring in your passport, and visa documents, proof of insurance and a rucksack/bag. We will provide you with your information package this will tell you what time you need to be at the college.

On Day One, all students take an English placement test, meet the College staff and get an introduction to the College, facilities, courses and the local area. You will be taken on a local tour in the area, showing you around the local town centre, the bank, the post office, cafes and shops. 
You will receive an individual timetable later in the day and your classes begin on the following day.

This depends on your level and the time of year – many of the classes run in the morning. 
Once we have set your lesson schedule, we will try to keep it the same.

Yes, if your visa allows and there is availability at the college. You should also pay your course fees in advance.

Personal breaks will depend on your visa regulations, and you must give the college at least one month’s notice if you want to take days off.

The Academic English and University Preparation Programmes have set holiday dates which must be followed.

All schools and colleges are closed on public holidays like Christmas and New Year’s Day, though they differ depending on the country.

In class

During the course, you will be given an Individual Student Learning Record (ILR) to assess your progress on a daily basis. Your teacher will record your class work, spoken participation in class, homework and scores on the level tests, which take place every 10 weeks and are followed by a one-on-one with your teacher.* Projects, student portfolios and formal examinations such as IELTS, examinations also form an important part of your overall assessment. You will also receive a unit test each week.

On average there are 8 students in a class, with a maximum of 12.

A standard lesson is 45 minutes.

It depends on the course. 
For instance:

  • General English: 20 lessons of general English + 4 sessions of Self-directed learning
  • Academic English: 20 lessons of general English + 4 sessions of Self-directed learning
    Plus 8 Academic IELTS lessons
  • Business English: Same as General English + 8 English for Business lessons
  • Summer English: 20 lessons of general English

Yes of course! Teachers encourage you to speak in all classes. The schools have an English-only policy, and outside the school you will speak English with your host family, new friends, and around town.

Yes, we offer one-to-one lessons in all our schools.
